Convert JPEG to AVIF

Converting JPEG to AVIF is worth doing when the destination matters more than the source. JPEG is built for photographs, where small files matter more than perfect fidelity. AVIF is built for the smallest modern web images, at the cost of slower encoding. Which one you want depends entirely on where the image is going next.

Worth it when you control the delivery and the audience is on current browsers. AVIF is meaningfully smaller than both JPEG and WebP, though encoding is slower, so a large batch takes longer to process than the same batch to WebP.

AVIF is the largest saving available from an already compressed source, frequently half the size of JPG at matching quality. Encoding is noticeably slower and support covers current browsers but little else, so it suits images you are delivering over the web rather than files someone else must open.
