About Optimize PDF

Optimising is the lossless counterpart to compressing. Nothing about how the document looks changes; what shrinks is the overhead the file has accumulated.

PDFs collect waste over their lifetime. Editing tools leave orphaned objects behind, fonts get embedded in full when only a handful of characters are used, the same image can be stored several times when it appears on multiple pages, and the cross reference table grows with every incremental save.

This tool rewrites the file structure, drops objects nothing references, deduplicates repeated resources and repacks the streams. Every visible element stays pixel identical, because no image is re-encoded and no text is rasterised.

Savings vary enormously. A file that has been through several rounds of editing can lose a third of its size. A clean export from a word processor may lose almost nothing, because there was nothing wasteful in it. If the document is large because of photographs or scans, Compress PDF is the tool that will actually help.

How to optimize pdf

  1. Load the PDF

    Drop the file in.

  2. Optimize

The structure is rewritten and unused objects are removed.

  3. Compare and download

The size before and after is shown so you can judge whether it was worth it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between this and Compress PDF?

This is lossless and changes nothing visible, working only on file structure. Compress PDF reduces image quality to hit a smaller size. Use this first, and compress only if you still need to be smaller.

Will anything look different afterwards?

No. Images are not re-encoded and text is not rasterised, so the rendered document is identical.

Why did my file barely shrink?

Because it was already efficient. Freshly exported PDFs often have little waste. The big wins come from documents that have been edited repeatedly or passed through several tools.

Can I optimize after merging?

Yes, and it is a good habit. Merging copies shared resources such as fonts into the combined file, and optimising afterwards removes the duplicates.
