About Crop PDF
Cropping a PDF is usually about reclaiming space. A scanned book carries wide grey margins from the scanner bed, an academic paper wastes a third of every page on whitespace, and reading either on a tablet means the text is tiny because the margins are being scaled along with it.
Drag the crop handles and a live preview shows the result before you commit. Apply the same boundaries to every page, or crop pages individually when a scan drifted partway through.
Cropping in a PDF changes the visible page box rather than cutting the content away. The area outside your crop is hidden, not destroyed, which is why cropping does not reduce file size and why the original content can be restored by resetting the box. That last part matters: cropping is not a way to remove sensitive material from a page. Use Redact PDF for that.
Because nothing is re-rendered, text stays selectable and images keep full resolution. A cropped page prints at the smaller size, so a heavily cropped document also uses less paper.
How to crop pdf
- Load the document
Drop the PDF in and the first page renders so you can see what you are working with.
- Set the boundaries
Drag the crop handles. The preview updates live, and you can apply the same crop to all pages or adjust them one by one.
- Export
Download the cropped PDF. Page dimensions change, content quality does not.
Frequently asked questions
Does cropping make the file smaller?
No, and this surprises people. Cropping hides content by changing the page box rather than deleting anything, so the data is still in the file. If size is the goal, use Compress PDF or Optimize PDF.
Can cropping hide confidential information?
It should never be used for that. The cropped area is merely outside the visible box and can be recovered by anyone who resets it. Redact PDF removes the underlying content properly.
Can I crop different pages differently?
Yes. Apply one crop to the whole document, or set boundaries per page when a scan shifted partway through.
Will the text still be selectable?
Yes. Cropping does not rasterise anything, so text, links and vector graphics all survive intact.
