About Edit PDF Metadata
PDF metadata is the information about the document rather than in it: title, author, subject, keywords and the software that produced it. It is what a file manager displays, what many document systems index on, and what shows in the title bar of a PDF reader.
It is also frequently wrong. A PDF exported from a template inherits the template author's name, a document produced from a scan is titled something like Scan_20240312, and a file that has passed through several tools carries the name of whichever one touched it last.
This tool shows what is currently stored and lets you change it. Edits are written to the document information dictionary, so any reader or indexing system picks up the corrected values.
If the goal is removing metadata rather than correcting it, for example before sending a document outside your organisation, Scrub Metadata strips the fields entirely along with the hidden ones this editor does not display.
How to edit pdf metadata
- Open the PDF
Drop the file in and the current metadata is read and displayed.
- Edit the fields
Change title, author, subject or keywords. Leaving a field blank clears it.
- Save
Download the PDF with the updated properties written in.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my PDF show someone else's name as the author?
Because the author field is usually inherited from the account or template that created the original document and is rarely updated afterwards. Editing it here corrects what readers and file managers display.
Does changing metadata alter the document content?
No. Only the information dictionary is rewritten. Pages, text and images are untouched.
What is the difference between this and Scrub Metadata?
This edits the visible fields so they say something correct. Scrub Metadata removes them, including hidden entries such as producer software and timestamps, which is what you want before sharing a file externally.
Will the changes show everywhere?
In anything that reads standard PDF metadata, yes. Some systems cache document properties, so a file already indexed may need re-adding to show the new values.
