Convert JPG to AVIF

Converting JPG to AVIF is worth doing when the destination matters more than the source. JPG is built for photographs, where small files matter more than perfect fidelity. AVIF is built for the smallest modern web images, at the cost of slower encoding. Which one you want depends entirely on where the image is going next.

Going straight from JPG to AVIF is the most aggressive size reduction available here, frequently halving the file. Because JPG has already discarded detail, keep the AVIF quality high: compressing an already compressed image twice is where visible mush comes from. If you still hold the camera original, convert from that instead.

AVIF is the largest saving available from an already compressed source, frequently half the size of JPG at matching quality. Encoding is noticeably slower and support covers current browsers but little else, so it suits images you are delivering over the web rather than files someone else must open.
