Convert PDF to PNG

Exporting PDF pages as PNG is the right choice when the pages contain text, tables, diagrams or line art. PNG compression is lossless, so every edge stays exactly as sharp as it was in the document.

This is the practical difference from exporting to JPG. JPG compresses by discarding detail, and the artefacts it produces cluster around high contrast edges, which is precisely what text is made of. A paragraph exported as JPG picks up a faint haze around the letters that is obvious once you notice it. The same paragraph as PNG is clean.

The trade is file size. A photographic page exported as PNG can be several times larger than the same page as JPG for no visible benefit, because PNG has no way to compress photographic content efficiently. Pages that are mostly photographs are the case for choosing JPG instead.

PNG also carries transparency, so pages with transparent regions export without a white background being forced in. That matters when the exported page is going to be layered over something else in a design tool.

Resolution is yours to set. Ninety six DPI suits screen use, one hundred and fifty is a sensible general default, and three hundred matches print quality. Multi-page documents are packaged into a ZIP assembled in your browser, so a long document is one download rather than hundreds.

Frequently asked questions

Should I export to PNG or JPG?

PNG for pages with text, tables, diagrams or line art, because it is lossless and keeps edges sharp. JPG for pages that are mostly photographs, where it produces much smaller files with no visible loss.

What resolution should I choose?

Ninety six DPI for screen use, one hundred and fifty for general purpose, three hundred for print. Beyond three hundred the files grow considerably with nothing visibly gained.

Will the text be selectable in the PNG files?

No. A PNG is pixels, so the text becomes part of the image. Use PDF to Text if you need the words, or OCR PDF to make a scan searchable.

Is there a page limit?

None imposed. Rendering runs on your device, so a long document takes longer rather than being refused, and the pages come back as a single ZIP.

Are my pages uploaded to convert them?

No. Rendering happens in your browser using the same engine Firefox uses to display PDFs. Nothing is transmitted.
